For most of his life, Derrick has anguished over a troubled relationship with his father, an impatient and inattentive man whose affections were fully lavished on his wife, Derrick’s mother, whom he adored to the exclusion of all others, even his children. Derrick’s adult years descend into a debauch of alcoholism and drug abuse; interiorily, he endeavors to sequester himself from the afflictions of life, to hold himself at a “safe” distance from others. Upon his demise by an overdose, he passes into a twilight world, a sea-battered island, suffused in the reddish glow of a distant, unchanging horizon, ever caught in the flush between night and day—an in-between place that reflects the internal landscape of his earthly existence. The island’s crescent line of cliff-tops is dotted with the ruins of Gothic castles and cathedrals that, oddly, are sparsely inhabited by “people I hardly knew,” and then, he meets his father. But soon after their reunion, Derrick’s father is snatched away by the soul-stalking harpies who terrorize the islanders, capturing them in great nets and hauling them into the island’s Hell vent into the nether regions, never to be seen again. And so begins Derrick’s journey to find his father, a trek that leads him into Dante-esque dominions, where a world peculiarly similar to that described in The Divine Comedy emerges as an astonishing reality, from a horrific inferno to a glorious paradise, where Derrick, at last, reunites his father and mother not far from the dazzling Empyrean, the entrance of Heaven
